Achmed and Merton Yolles Memorial Regatta Results

OK, enough already! Yeah, I’m late in reporting the results of the Merton Yolles Memorial Regatta but former Regatta Chair, I had an excuse! Last night I was watching the you tube clip of Jeff Dunham, the ventriloquist, doing his routine with the dummy Achmed the Dead Terrorist. The comedy sketch had so much in common with the court case I’ve spent the last two weeks on as a jury member that it is scary. What do an Imam, a Hooters waitress, alcohol, more alcohol and a limousine ride on Saturday Sept 11, 2011 have in common? If it wasn’t so tragic it would be great stand up routine. Well, the results of the Merton Yolles Memorial Regatta fall into the same category, tragic and funny.

The tragic part: the winner (grumble, grumble) was Paradigm, AGAIN.

Followed by Mist, then Sweet Grapes. Vitta E Bella and Liquid Asset were DNF. JetLag was a DNS because he lost his shrouds, when I told him he was full of Sheet, I got no response. But that’s not the whole story:

Liquid Asset acted as the rabbit and carried the skipper and an all female crew. We might not have finished but we definitely had a good time!

MIST was and is still complaining that they can’t get any speed with their new high tech sails. They changed their forestay, changed their mast rake, the moon is full, yadda yadda, yadda. As a famous you tube clip on laser sailing has stated HTFU!

Sweet Grapes came in 3rd. I didn’t hear any whining from them other than asking where the HELL was the Regatta Chair, who forgot to ice down the beer and why is the engine sputtering? Well maybe not in that order.

The best part of the race was attempting to set the course among the skippers at the skipper’s meeting. After rejecting my initial course recommendation, the skippers argued for the next twenty minutes before your’s truly stepped in and made the decision. Delegating the authority is like throwing raw meat to Dobermans, reminds me of Sunday dinner at home with my brother, the attorney and my sister, the attorney. Great sport!!

The race itself was the first one held with a coarse around our new “C” and “Z” marks! It was an upwind and downwind course favored by Robert and Keith and yet it made no difference on the water.

Thanks to everyone who participated, special thanks to Yvette and KJ for making the day a success. Winds were in the high twenties and no one flew a spinnaker on the day.

Jim Manishin, Regatta Chair
