Brig Lady Washington to Stop in Half Moon Bay for Education Programs

Half Moon Bay, Calif. – The brig Lady Washington, which has just started its 2011-2012 tour of California ports, has scheduled a stop in Half Moon Bay November 1-6. The ship, which appeared in the Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, will tie up at Pillar Point Harbor and offer educational programs for K-12 students and sailing excursions to the general public.

The education programs feature several learning stations aboard the ship with emphasis on ancient navigation techniques, sea life of the Pacific Coast, and the lives of the 18th century mariners who sailed in the original Lady Washington, built in the 1750s. Space is still available, as are scholarships for schools with 40 percent or more students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. To book a one-hour or three-hour education program, call 800-200-5239, or email education@historicalseaport.org.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6, the Lady Washington will take guests on a three-hour public sailing experience featuring a sea shanty, maritime storytelling, and a chance for guests to take the tiller of a real tall ship, conditions permitting. Tickets are $35 each; groups of 8 or more automatically receive a 15% per ticket discount. To purchase tickets, visit www.historicalseaport.org or call 800-200-5239.

The ship will also open for walk-on visits on these dates and times: November 2-4; 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; November 5-6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Crew in 18th century costume will welcome guests aboard. A $3 donation per person is appreciated. No reservations are required.

For more than 20 years, Lady Washington has sailed to more than a dozen California ports offering living history education programs to school children and the public. Built in 1989 in Aberdeen, Wash., and home-ported in Grays Harbor, Wash., the 112-foot ship is the Official Ship of the State of Washington. She regularly appears in television programs, advertisements, and motion pictures, including Star Trek: Generations, in which she appeared as HMS Enterprise.
