The small boats ruled the day this past Saturday for Coyote Point Yacht Club’s Annual Double Up & Back Regatta!
This was traditionally a double-handed race, but had turned into a full-crew race last year in order to encourage more participation. This year we simply decided to hold two divisions – one for boats being double-handed, and the other division for full crew. A total of eleven boats showed up for the race: seven boats double-handing and four boats with full crew. There was also a very impressive turnout of female sailors, as five of the seven double-handing boats had both sexes on board!
On hand to do the real work was Gary Edwards with the Panda Angler and his partners in committee-boat crime, Lee Stevens and Bill Tobin. After a short postponement due to very light winds, the first division started at 1:16pm and the second division at 1:26pm. The short course was from the starting line between the Z-mark and the Panda, up to Channel Marker 6, over to the Birdcage, and then back down to Z.
Light to zero wind was the order of business for practically the entire first leg – allowing the small boats to gain a great head-start advantage, but then the wind kicked up and we had a steady 10-12 knots around the rest of the course. All around, it was a very close race with the fastest boat finishing the course in two hours and twenty minutes, and the slowest boat finishing within two hours and forty-two minutes.
The Liquid Kitty’s head start on the first leg worked out significantly in her favor as she corrected out 35 seconds ahead of Paradigm to take first place in Division 1, and despite Friday’s Eagle’s valiant run, Escape corrected out SEVEN seconds ahead for first place in Division 2.
After the race, most of the skippers and crew came up to the Club for a refreshing beverage and over 30 people enjoyed the yummy Chinese New Year dinner. Did you miss out on the fun? Be sure to join us next time!
Our eternal gratitude to Gary, Bill and Lee for spending their afternoon out on the water for our benefit, and many thanks to the participating boats, skippers and crew! Full results available by clicking on “Boating at CPYC” above and then selecting “Race Results.”
